Ed Fairburn

Cartography Portraits Ed Fairburn graphics

In the last few weeks I seem to keep coming across the work of this UK based artist: Ed Fairburn - Totally stunning and unique artworks - Ed creates these beautiful, detailed pieces of artwork through illustrating old maps with intricate pen and pencil cross-hatching. Wonderful vision of creating something out of nothing with, to me, a slightly ethereal, haunting quality. I love the simple black and white designs, where the map lines and textured line of skin blend so perfectly.
Ed says: " I paint, draw and construct using a flexible range of tangible media across a wide range of surfaces and contexts, allowing my practice to exist across various disciplines. The work I produce  is largely self-directed, allowing me to explore a wealth of ideas and concepts which need to be realised".

"Through my studies of the human form I examine the patterns and structures which exist
across the body. I disassemble those structures and reconstruct them onto pre-patterned surfaces, including maps. The creative process involves synchronising both subject and surface. I search for similarities between the characteristics of the human figure and the topographical features of the map, resulting in a unique amalgamation".

Press

Catching up on some past press on various blogs! Just stumbled across this feature on  a lovely German stylists blog: http://www.sivann-schneider.de/

Rock Villa Designs

Rock Villa Designs was newly launched in 2012 by Suzi Williams. Using her 15 years’ experience as a textile and stationery designer, she produces exquisitely made laser-cut greetings cards, beautiful, contemporary prints and large collaged and hand drawn artworks.
I just love the beautiful embroidered prints that are made from thick Belgian linen and have playful prints that feel appropriate for grown ups and kids at the same time. I like them styled really minimally – they feel soft and textured but clean enough to not distract from a modern space.
