In the last few weeks I seem to keep coming across the work of this UK based artist: Ed Fairburn - Totally stunning and unique artworks - Ed creates these beautiful, detailed pieces of artwork through illustrating old maps with intricate pen and pencil cross-hatching. Wonderful vision of creating something out of nothing with, to me, a slightly ethereal, haunting quality. I love the simple black and white designs, where the map lines and textured line of skin blend so perfectly.
Ed says: " I paint, draw and construct using a flexible range of tangible media across a wide range of surfaces and contexts, allowing my practice to exist across various disciplines. The work I produce is largely self-directed, allowing me to explore a wealth of ideas and concepts which need to be realised".
"Through my studies of the human form I examine the patterns and structures which exist
across the body. I disassemble those structures and reconstruct them onto pre-patterned surfaces, including maps. The creative process involves synchronising both subject and surface. I search for similarities between the characteristics of the human figure and the topographical features of the map, resulting in a unique amalgamation".
Available as limited edition prints or original works (I am coveting this piece!)
